Gras=Grease=Use all the grease because lent is going to start
Mardi Gras started when Catholics wanted To party before lent because they’re about to give things up and abstain from meat. Which is why Mardi Grad is called Carneval
Carne=Meat
Val=Give up
Mardi Gras came to the US when the French arrived in Louisiana and brought their Catholic practices. Originally at the stroke of midnight all parties stopped for lent. But sadly, now the true meaning is lost and is flooded with parties. So yes, Catholics know how to party(:
